Every year one student from each school can run to be elected as a student officer for the Southern Interscholastic Press Association. As the 2020-2021 school year came around I knew I wanted to run to help represent my school and make the organization the best it could be for my fellow student journalists across the south. At the 2020 SIPA convention I was elected as the Vice President for this year's board. As Vice President I have been given the privilege of helping figure out how this year's conference will work with the uncertainty COVID- 19 has created. I've assisted creating the theme for this year's convention as well as developing the logo. I have worked with my fellow student officers to brainstorm ways to keep SIPA as normal as possible for our attendees despite the conference's shift to an online platform.
2019 Washington Journalism and Media Conference Youth Correspondent
During the 2019 school year I was chosen as a representative to attend WJMC 2019. I was given the opportunity at this conference to participate in classes and lectures from industry professionals over the course of a week. I also created a blog to document the conference and gain college credit. This experience gave me invaluable experience and insight into the world of professional journalism as it taught me skills in all areas of my work and showed me what it is like to be a journalist in the real world. This conference also provided valuable networking opportunity as I have been able to connect with many industry professionals as a result of WJMC's extensive Alumni network.
2020 Yearbook Business Manager
As the production of the 2020 yearbook drew to a close I was assigned the role of Business Manager and given the job to finalize all business ad sales and create their place in the book. I spent weeks compiling information from ads sold by staff members and contacting businesses to create graphics that properly displayed their advertisements in the book.
2021 Yearbook Marketing
Along with my co-editor in chiefs and our adviser I helped create a marketing campaign around our school promoting book sales. This marketing revealed our theme to the student boy and also encouraged sales early into the year by setting deadlines for certain prices. This campaign helped us achieve over 70% of our sales goal by the New Year.
Journalism Teaching Assistant
For the past two school years I have assisted as a TA (teacher's assistant) for my schools Intro to Journalism class. I have assisted the teacher in lessons on journalistic writing style and how to cover major events. I have shared my own experiences with the journalism classes and given tips on how to write journalistically.
